Nakedness in it’s various manifestations is an ever-present element of my work and has been from the beginning. I’ve often wondered why. For me it’s signifies vulnerability but also openness. It’s intensely personal and we rarely experience other people in this way. We are stripped down, so to speak, to our core and cannot hide behind the artifice of our daily costume, our clothes. My two nephews hugging in their underwear is a tender and heart-warming, yet vaguely sad, moment that expresses the depth of their relationship as brothers. The starkness of their thin semi-naked bodies clinging to each other outdoors heightens their emotional connection and our, the viewer’s, emotional response.
